Simple Car Mod

It is perfectly normal to carry around 5 or 6 bins of art supplies in your car permanently, right?

I drive a sweet little old Toyota Rav4, circa 1998. I love my little old beater. It can fit lots of stuff, feet 8’ft boards form dash to end yet it is super easy to park in the city. The only trouble is the back loading area was always turning into an avalanche of “stuff”. Not very useful.

For this project I used

  • Self-tapping screws
  • impact driver
  • Sharpie
  • Random metal shelf found on the side of the road
  • teenie tiny gate hinges
Before: The unaltered back of my Rav4 after I took out all the crap.
After: 50% of the goods back in with room to spare for groceries and easy access to my manage all the things folding cart.
Giant pile of stuff that was haphazardly tossed around my car. About 25% Trash, 25% other peoples stuff, 50% My traveling art kit
Close up on the little gate hinges I used. They have a little play and allow me to see through to the stuff. yet the shelf doesn’t slide around.
new shelf installed over the wheel base.
See the shelf flipping up on it’s nice hinges.
